How To Prepare For A Garage Cleanout (And Actually Finish It)

Homeowners sorting a garage before a cleanout

The garage is where good intentions go to wait. Holiday bins, half-finished projects, the treadmill that became a coat rack. If you have been putting off a garage cleanout, the problem usually is not motivation. It is not having a plan. Here is the simple approach we recommend to customers before we arrive.

1. Give yourself a finish line

Pick a date and book your haul-away first. A scheduled pickup turns “someday” into a deadline, and it means the junk actually leaves instead of migrating to a different corner.

2. Sort into three piles only

Every item goes into one of three groups: keep, donate or haul away. Skip the “maybe” pile. If you have not used it in two years and it is not sentimental, it is not a maybe.

3. Work one wall at a time

Start at the garage door and move clockwise. Finishing one wall completely gives you visible progress and room to stage your piles.

4. Flag the things we cannot take

Set aside paint, fuel, solvents, pesticides and other hazardous materials. Your county household hazardous waste program is the right home for those. Everything else, from old shelving to that broken freezer, can go on our truck.

5. Let someone else do the lifting

You do not need to drag anything to the curb. Our crew carries items from wherever they sit, loads the truck and sweeps up before we leave. Most garages are cleared in a single visit.
