An Estate Cleanout Checklist For Families

Estate cleanout in progress

Clearing out a family home is one of the hardest projects most people ever take on. There are decisions in every drawer. A little structure makes the work lighter, and makes sure nothing important is lost along the way.

Before you start

  • Locate important documents first: wills, deeds, titles, insurance policies, tax records and account statements.
  • Agree as a family on how keepsakes will be divided before anyone begins packing.
  • Photograph rooms as they are. It helps later with memories and with paperwork.

Room by room

  • Start with the least sentimental spaces such as the garage, basement and utility rooms.
  • Use four labels: keep, family, donate, remove.
  • Check pockets, books, boxes and the backs of drawers for cash, jewelry and letters.

Bring in help for the heavy part

Once the keepsakes are safe, the remaining furniture, appliances and household contents can be removed in one visit. Our crews work respectfully and carefully, donate what can be donated, and leave the home broom-clean for sale or handover.

Give yourself time

There is no prize for finishing in a weekend. Spread the sorting over several sessions if you can, and let us handle the lifting when you are ready.
